NOTE: This is the second article in a series about LG’s 2022 TV offerings. Please refer to our previous report for additional reference on new features on LG 2022 OLED TVs.
LG is the world’s largest manufacturer of OLED TVs and for 2022, it has continued its commitment to OLED TV technology. Although LG also offers a line of LCD-Based TVs (Nanocell, MiniLED QNED), they will not be discussed in this article.
Tip: Some of the features listed in this article were also included in the companion article referenced above, but contain some additional details here.
LG OLED TV Tech Refresher
An OLED TV uses self-emitting Organic LEDs (no blacklight required), producing both light and color. OLED TVs are not as bright as some LCD-based TVs and have been traditionally susceptible to screen burn-in if the static images are displayed for long periods. However, through continuous innovation, the burn-in issue has been minimized.
All OLED TVs use screen panels made by LG Display Company (a sister company to LG Electronics) but add their video processing enhancements. TV brands that make OLED TVs include LG Electronics, Sony, Vizio, Panasonic, and Phillips (Panasonic and Philips OLED TVs are not widely available in the U.S.)
Tip: Although QD-OLED TVs are starting to appear on the scene (spearheaded by Samsung and Sony), and may carry the OLED label, they are not the same as traditional OLED TVs.
LG OLED evo
LG has implemented OLED evo technology in both G2 and select C2 series sets. EVO OLED panels deliver higher brightness while maintaining clarity and detail. Powered by LG’s new α (Alpha) 9 Gen 5 intelligent processor, Brightness Booster™ technology enables G2 series TVs to deliver enhanced brightness through improved heat dissipation and a more advanced algorithm.
LG α9 Gen 5 Intelligent Processor
Select LG OLED TV models (Z2, G2, and C2 series) incorporate the α9 Generation 5 intelligent processor. This processor employs a deep-learning algorithm to enhance the upscaling performance giving images a more three-dimensional quality. The a9 Gen 5 also supports the Dynamic Tone-mapping Pro Algorithm, which individually processes over 5,000 areas on the screen, enhancing each to produce a more vivid and detailed image, in both brighter and darker parts of the picture.
In addition to video, the processor also supports better audio quality via AI Sound Pro. You can use the built-in speakers in select TVs to produce a virtual 7.1.2 surround.
The LG B2 and A2 series utilize the step-down α7 Gen 5 processor that supports Dynamic Tone-mapping, AI Sound Pro, and virtual 5.1.2 surround sound.
Upgraded webOS Navigation and Features
LG 2022 OLED TVs come with webOS 22 (previously named version 6.0), the newest version of LG’s innovative Smart TV platform. webOS 22 offers new personalization options, including customizable user profiles that allow each member of the household to tailor their viewing experience and enjoy easier access to their preferred channels, apps, and content services.
WebOS22 also provides added convenience with NFC Magic Tap (a simple way to mirror the screen from mobile to TV), Room To Room Share (allows cable or satellite content mirroring via Wi-Fi from one TV to another), and Always Ready (turns an LG TV into a media display when not in use). LG’s webOS22 platform also includes updates to LG Channels with a total of 350 free ad-supported channels.
HDR: Dolby Vision IQ with Precision Detail
LG’s 2022 OLED TVs are the first to adopt Dolby Vision IQ with Precision Detail in addition to compatibility with HDR10 and HLG. This new variation of Dolby Vision reveals even more from compatible content, revealing detail in both bright and dark areas that may not have been noticeable previously.
Gaming Support
In the past couple of model years, LG has put a big emphasis on gaming performance.
LG OLED TVs offer a 0.1 millisecond response time, low input lag, and include up to four HDMI ports supporting multiple HDMI 2.1 features. Seamless cloud gaming is also available on LG OLED via built-in support for Google Stadia and GeForce NOW.
LG’s Game Optimizer menu allows users to switch between specialized gaming features and presets. The Dark Room Mode (new for 2022) adjusts screen brightness for a better gaming experience with the lights off. LG OLED TVs are G-SYNC® compatible, FreeSync™ Premium, and support variable refresh rate (VRR). Presets have been added for 2022 that allows users to select game genres, including a sports mode.
Screen Sizes, Models & Pricing
One of the complaints about OLED TVs is that they have been traditionally offered in a limited number of screen sizes. However, for 2022, screen sizes range from 42 to 97 inches. The smaller screen sizes are especially appealing for gamers, which LG has been pushing in the past two years.
If the model series is highlighted you can click on it and view that model’s official LG product page complete feature/specification details.
Prices will be filled in as they become available. Prices may vary due to promotion, retailer, or other market conditions.
